If you’re planning a beach vacation and this year it’s with a baby you probably already know it won’t be like any other beach vacation you may have taken as a couple. Chances are if you have older children you’ve already navigated these waters but for those who haven’t, we have some excellent tips to help you and your baby have an enjoyable and safe time at the beach.
Prepare in advance and a beach vacation with your baby will be a pleasant and fun-filled time. As long as your baby’s basic needs are met they will be content to go anywhere you’re going. Keep them on their usual eating and sleeping schedules, protect them from the sun, and they’ll be happy.
Some of our vacation rentals come with baby equipment available (cribs, highchairs, play yards, etc.) at no extra charge. When you’re considering the different rentals look at the list of amenities to make sure equipment is available. If not, you’ll need to either bring your own or rent the equipment locally.
Here are some tips that will come in useful for your baby’s first beach vacation.
- When to travel. If you’re flying, schedule your flight during your baby’s nap time. Walk around and play with the baby while in the airport. The more energy your baby exerts in the airport the less energy the baby exerts while in the air.
- Stay on schedule. While on vacation maintain the same schedule you and the baby are on at home. That means the time you wake up and go to sleep, the time you eat meals, and when nap time is.
- Bring favorites. Bring your baby’s favorite stuffed animals, a special blanket, pacifier and whatever toys they’re used to having around them.
- Ask first. Does the rental where you’ll be staying provide sleeping arrangements for babies? Ask about car seats from the car rental agency, too.
- Stay calm. Don’t stress out getting ready for your trip. Stay calm, move slowly, and it will help the baby to stay relaxed as well.
- Less is more. Don’t over stimulate your baby. Provide a quiet and comfortable space for them to take their naps. Afternoon naps improve the chances of a quality evening.
- Use sunscreen. When you’re on a beach vacation be sure to keep the baby out of the midday sun. Use hats, lightweight clothing and sun shelters like umbrellas. Apply sunscreen and consider renting a cabana or sun tent.
- Babyproof everything. If your baby is mobile, be sure to baby proof your accommodations as soon as you arrive.
Follow these helpful baby tips and you’re sure to have a wonderful vacation with your baby. Be sure to bring your camera because there will be plenty of opportunities for great photos that will only come around once!
