Talk to anyone that has moved recently and you’ll likely hear about all the stress they experienced during the moving process. If you prepare for your move well in advance you can side step many of those stressful opportunities.
For instance, from the moment you decide you’re going to move, start purging your belongings to rid yourself of what you don’t need or use. Throw out what’s broken and what hasn’t been used in over a year. This is the time to get rid of the furniture you never really liked or have grown tired of. Give it to family members, sell it or donate to charity.
Take the time before the move to clean everything you’re bringing with you. You don’t want to put dirty carpets or rugs into your new home. Curtains and drapes can perform better with a yearly cleaning as well.
All those books you’ve been collecting can be donated to your local library or boxed up and offered for free on Craig’s List or your local newspaper. Good Will or the Salvation Army will also take whatever you’re willing to donate and it will be a tax deduction for you.
The best time to start the purging is long before the actual move. Don’t wait until closer to the time of the move because it will always take far longer than you planned.
It’s easiest to start on one level of the house and proceed from there. Stick to one room at a time. Use some boxes to aid in sorting and label with where they’re going (sell, donate, family, etc.). Don’t overlook the closets, cabinets and drawers. It’s remarkable how much stuff we can stow away for that “someday” use that never comes.
